Boholano Pedro Angco Jr. makes Seanelas art from collected ocean litter

Bohol native Pedro Angco Jr. is advocating for cleaner seas through colorful artwork fashioned from collected ocean debris: slippers, discarded wires, plastic, and the like.

Photos of Angco’s residual waste artworks went viral online when Sangguniang Kabataan Federation President – Bohol, Kien Alphe Garsuta shared the photos to netizens on August 23, 2020.

The inspiring initiative and intricate art pieces from the Bohol artist garnered much support from Filipino netizens, many remarking that Angco’s powerful advocacy behind his art resonated deeply with them as well.

Pedro Angco Jr. is also a proud environmentalist. Angco’s recent work is dubbed “Seanelas”, a portmanteau referencing the sea and the Filipino term for slippers.

The Bohol artist champions upcycling recycled materials and converts them into brilliant sculptures and art pieces. One of his sculptures won the 2nd prize in the GSIS National Art Competition held on June 2017 at Pasay City, Manila.

The 57-year-old Boholano artist says he had never expected his works to go viral and was overwhelmed by all the support from fans.
