Filipino Erik Matti wins Best Director at inaugural Content Asia Awards

Filipino filmmaker Erik Matti has again raised the Philippine colors after competing with Asia’s best and winning Best Director at the inaugural Content Asia Awards.

Matti bested four other nominees and bagged the award for Best Director of a Scripted TV Programme for “Island of Dreams”, the first episode of the HBO and Warner Media 8-part anthology drama series, Food Lore.

Matti was honored by the first ContentAsia Awards of the 14-year-old information platform curated to offer insights into Asia’s content environment.

Reality Entertainment, a Pinoy production company founded by Matti and co-managed by fellow filmmaker Dondon Monteverde, shared the good news on their social media about the victory of the Filipino director and greeted him for his recent achievement in the competition.

“Congratulations Director @erikmatti for winning BEST DIRECTOR of a SCRIPTED TV PROGRAMME at the Content Asia Awards 2020 for HBO and Warner Media’s FOOD LORE Island of Dreams! We are very proud of you!” the Reality Entertainment said on their Instagram post on August 28, 2020.

Food Lore’s episode 1 directed by Matti was aired in November 2019. It tells the story of a domestic helper played by Angeli Bayani who was also nominated Best Actress who returns to her hometown from Manila and realizes the changes in her family dynamics.

Other Filipino filmmakers have also been making headlines for representing the Philippines and winning in various festivals around the world.

In September 2019, high school teacher of theatre and filmmaker, Geraldo “Jek” Jumawan, was chosen Best Actor by the Indie Film Chart based in the United Kingdom.

Teen actor Louise Abuel of the movie “Edward” won the Best Actor Award at the Dhaka International Film Festival in Bangladesh in January 2020.

Just this August, online series “Gameboys” lead actor Elijah Canlas bagged the Best Actor award for the movie “Kalel, 15” at the 17th Asian Film Festival in Rome, Italy.
