Ormoc City’s Princess Honey Arbilon bagged the bronze medal of the World Pentathlon Laser All Stars virtual competition.
The 18-year-old Filipino athlete made it to the women’s grand finals besting Maryia Gnedtchik of Belarus for the bronze medal in the under-22 women’s category won by Silvia Venturi of Mexico while Darcy Dryden of Great Britain came in second in the event held online on September 9, 2020.
The Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM), the official body for the sport, opted to host the laser shooting contest online to keep the athletes safe amid the pandemic.
Over 256 athletes from 33 countries participated in the All Stars event after qualifying at the Laser Home Run event in May.
The World Laser All Stars marks the celebration of Pierre de Coubertin Pentathlon day, which was launched by UIPM in 2018 to recognize the sport’s heritage.
Arbilon was one of the gold medalists for the Philippines at the Modern Pentathlon at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in 2019.
Her fellow Filipino SEA Games medalists are also making waves for their victories amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
SEA Games gold medalist Roger Casugay is the first Filipino to receive the Pierre de Coubertin Act of Fair Play trophy in Monaco named after the father of the modern Olympic Games, for saving a fellow competitor from drowning in last year’s games.
Kristina Knott of the Philippines also made history after breaking another 33-year-old Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) record, this time in the 100-meter dash.
