Liter of Light’s “Light It Forward” Challenge to hand-build solar lamps is honoring workers in the frontlines of the battle against the coronavirus disease.
The Filipino-born global grassroots solar lighting movement launched in August the new website for its LIGHT IT FORWARD campaign, built in partnership with Good News Pilipinas and the Rotary Club of Makati Business District to highlight the milestones for Liter of Light’s latest project.
The LIGHT IT FORWARD project, a platform that challenges artists, media, businesses, and service groups to build solar lamps while at home and under community quarantine, is sending out messages that honor and pay tribute to the dedication and sacrifice of essential workers in the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Liter of Light team encourages people to join the challenge “By giving just 20 minutes of their time, “LIGHT IT FORWARD” gives Filipinos a new way to honor the frontliners risking their lives to protect the public from the COVID-19 scourge”.
“Inspired by the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, LIGHT IT FORWARD invites ordinary people to do extraordinary things by building solar lights for communities without electricity, even in the midst of this global health crisis,” Liter of Light adds.
LIGHT IT FORWARD has already enlisted the support of over 120 celebrities, influencers, and artists, with an estimated total fan base of 30 million supporters.
“At a time when our nation and our people around the world are suffering from the devastating effects of COVID19, your support has given us a platform to honor the essential workers who are keeping us safe during this pandemic,” says Illac Diaz, Liter of Light’s Founder and Executive Director.
“To those at the front lines, we want to honor you by giving you a glimmer of hope while bringing solar lights to energy-poor villages in the Philippines which last for five years,” the internationally-awarded Diaz said.
Everyone who participates in the LIGHT IT FORWARD campaign will receive a kit that they will use to build a solar light, which takes less than 30 minutes to assemble. Liter of Light has created online videos to guide participants on how to assemble the devices.
As the campaign gains traction, challenge participants have been asked to dedicate their light to an essential worker or frontline that has impacted them during the COVID-19 pandemic. After recording their solar light building process, each participant must challenge their friends to build a light.
The campaign is part of a broader strategy for Liter of Light, the official Philippine private sector representative to the upcoming World EXPO, which will take place in Dubai from October 2021 to March 2022.
The organization will use its platform to shine a light on how Filipino “malasakit” is paving a way for a brighter future in a tangible, measurable way.
Light it Forward is a continuation of Liter of Light’s previous partnership with Good News Pilipinas for the GOOD LIGHT MESSAGE OF HOPE that honored Filipinos giving support to frontliners during the Luzon-wide lockdown.
The Liter of Light partnership with the Rotary Club of Makati Business District is part of Rotary International’s mission to support the environment as the seventh area of focus declared during the recent 2020 Rotary International convention in Hawaii.
