Two overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) were awarded Outstanding Migrant Workers by Taiwan’s Labor Affairs Department for their dedication and hard work amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Evelyn G. Kaguitla, a factory worker, and Amelia A. Comilang, a careworker, are this year’s Best Employee Awardees in Taipei’s Annual Exemplary Workers Ceremony, reported the Philippine Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on September 4, 2020.

Kaguitla and Comilang received a trophy and cash prize of NT2,000 or approximately Php3,000 from Taipei City Mayor Hou You-Yi.

The Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) of Taiwan says Kaguitla, a factory worker in Taiwan for four years, was chosen for her good working attitude and for “extending help to those who are in need.” She served as a trainer in the various training programs of her company and initiated quality reforms in her company’s production line.

Comilang, a careworker, was honored for her patience and caring skills. She takes care of her employer’s grandmother who is suffering from dementia.

The two OFWs were honored in Taiwan during the annual search for Outstanding Migrant Workers along with other awardees composed of seven Taipei City model workers, 191 outstanding workers, 11 outstanding general affairs personnel of unions, and 63 outstanding unions.

The Outstanding Migrant Worker Award is an annual ceremony of the New Taipei City Labor Affairs Department which seeks to honor legal foreign workers in the city.

Many initiatives have helped OFWs in the ongoing global pandemic.

OFWs in Macau are getting support from a mental health app named “Kumusta, Kabayan”.

A tracking system was also devised to assist Filipino workers returning to the Philippines amid the pandemic.

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) waived remittance fees for OFWs sending money to their families back in the Philippines.
