The first-ever subway system in the Philippines has been unveiled in a virtual tour shared by the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

The progress in the development of the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP), first announced in 2017 and broke ground in February 2019, was shared by the DOTr social media in a video posted on September 4, 2020.

The video showed perspectives of the underground railway system and a tour of the Tsurumi Prefecture factory of the Japanese contractors of the project, JIM Technology Corporation (JIMT), that is designing the subway with disaster-resilient Japanese technology to withstand typhoons and earthquakes.

In the virtual tour, one of the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) to be used to fast-track the construction of the partial operability section of the MMSP was shown to have undergone the Factory Acceptance Test and will be expected to arrive in the Philippines by January 2021.

DOTr says the 6 TBMs being manufactured for the Philippines are integral in building the subway as these are used to excavate tunnels using a circular cross-section mechanism. TBM can also excavate through a variety of ground conditions, from hard rock to sand.

The first Philippine subway is expected to serve 370,000 passengers daily in its first year of full operations, with a design capacity that can accommodate up to 1.5 million passengers per day.

The subway will interconnect with the following train stations to ensure interconnectivity for passengers:

  • LRT-2 at Anonas Station
  • North-South Commuter Railway at Senate
  • FTI Station
  • Bicutan Station
  • LRT-1
  • MRT-7 at the Common Station

The Metro Manila Subway is expected to start partial operations in 2022 and will be fully operational by 2026.
